The state’s new tax law, signed by Gov. Rick Scott on Friday, is a boon for the wealthy and corporations, and a disaster for the state’s public schools. The new law, which goes into effect July 1, includes a number of tax cuts, including a reduction in the corporate income tax rate from 5.5 percent to 4.3 percent. But it also includes a provision that will allow corporations to pay no state income tax on the first $125,000 of their annual profits. The new tax law will also allow corporations to deduct the full cost of their capital investments from their taxable income, and it will eliminate the corporate alternative minimum tax, which is designed to help bring more companies to South Florida and promote the local economy.
